INSTITUTIONAL

The Graduate Studies in International Relations San Tiago Dantas (PPGRI STD) of the Interinstitutional Program [the São Paulo State University - (Unesp), the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), and the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (Puc-SP)] resulted from a special project of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES).

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the PPGRI STD of the Interinstitutional Program (Unesp, Unicamp, and Puc-SP), based at the Unesp Institute for Research on Public Policy and International Relations (IPPRI), is to offer excellent training by improving theoretical-methodological resources and to stimulate originality in investigative treatment to meet the demand for researchers in International Relations and training academic staff who can meet the demands of analysis and studies of International Relations and their impacts in Brazil based on a critical and interdisciplinary view.

Stimulating a permanent dialogue between specific, complementary disciplines and areas related to International Relations, the Program enables students to acquire training that encompasses the specific needs of International Relations and to take a more comprehensive look at the reality and complexities of social life.

Such analytical dynamism gives the Program a unique characteristic in Brazil, rendering it one of the programs that most favors the transdisciplinary character of International Relations.

Graduates must be able to adopt a critical and interdisciplinary view on the challenging topics that comprise the transformations of international society and their multiple impacts on instances of political, economic, and social life in the world, particularly regarding Brazil.

VISION

To become a school of thought in International Relations that can constitute a reference in the area and intervene in related debates. Such vision is based on its intellectual project, capacity for training, and a critical perspective of Brazilian society and international reality.

MISSION

The PPGRI STD (Unesp/Unicamp/Puc-SP) has the mission of training professionals who can exercise activities associated with International Relations in the public and private sectors, third sector institutions, and international organizations based on a critical and interdisciplinary view.

INSTITUTIONAL PARTICULARITIES AND ACADEMIC ACCOLADES

The PPGRI STD enjoys the collaboration of three universities in São Paulo by specific agreements: Unesp, Unicamp, and Puc-SP. In addition to the own structure of the Program, the association due to the collaboration of these institutions and their consolidated structure (for example, libraries, documentation centers, computer rooms, and spaces for promoting events) supports the solid teaching and research capacity of the Program.

Its various academic accolades include recent awards for “best thesis” in important institutions, such as ABRI, CAPES, and the Brazilian Association of Defense Studies.

CAPES EVALUATION

The Program must “be accountable” to Capes on all academic activities in which its students and professors participated by an annual report, the data of which are registered on a specific platform and are part of the documents required for the quadrennial evaluation. The evaluation score is extremely beneficial to PPGRI STD students and professors due to the credibility of the Program in the national scenario and the availability of CAPES-allocated resources through the Graduate Support Program (PROAP).

The results of this evaluation define the grade of the Program. The maximum score awarded by Capes is 7, and currently the PPGRI is 5.

In view of the relevance of the evaluation, the Program collects information annually from professors and students.

ANNUAL REPORT

At the end of each year, master’s and doctoral students must submit a report on all their activities, academic productions and their attendance in mandatory disciplines and activities. The report, and their updated Lattes curriculum, serves as a basis for the Capes report and to monitor students’ academic insertion during the course and verify compliance with the requirements of the Program. Students’ reports are to approved by their advisors.

The report contains the rules established in the Unesp Graduate Regulations and those specific to the Program regarding credits to be obtained and scholarship maintenance.

GRADUATES

The Program monitors and maps graduates’ performance by forms sent by email and by collecting data available on the internet on their Lattes curriculum and social media. Graduates’ voluntary responses have revolved around 30%. The form indicates graduates’ personal profile, education, and career. This form is used for the institutional evaluation of the Program and encompasses its strengths and weaknesses in its members’ opinion. The answers are used for the self-evaluation of the Program and its subsequent planning.

The last survey, which included graduates who obtained master’s and doctoral degrees from 2012 onward indicated that most master’s graduates completed the doctoral course of the program or other programs and that about 33% followed other activities. Most graduates worked or work in teaching in higher education, the others work in non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and/or in think tanks, management, service and public consultancy, and international organizations. About 6% of the graduates carried out postdoctoral studies.
